Sheriffs Support DOJ Decision on California

Thursday, March 8, 2018

Alexandria, VA – National Sheriffs' Association President Harold Eavenson and Executive Director and CEO Jonathan Thompson released the following statement regarding the Department of Justice filing suit against the State of California.

"It is unfortunate that this kind of action is needed, but after a year of noncompliance the government’s hands were tied," said Thompson.  Further, “Law enforcement, whether federal or local, has one responsibility, upholding the rule of law.  If Governor Brown has differences of view of federal law then they need to direct their ire towards Congress and change the law, not create more innocent victims of criminal illegal immigrants.”

"By purposely undermining the law of the land, California has put its citizens and law enforcement in harm's way. This is unconstitutional and undermines the purpose of congress, " said Eavenson.
