Mission
The Chaplains Committee is a non-denominational arm of the National Sheriffs' Association with the spiritual element of the law enforcement profession. The chaplains are concerned with the spiritual needs of both law enforcement officers and the incarcerated population. The goal of the Chaplains Committee is to meet the needs of the chaplains nationwide for sound training, access to helpful materials with spiritual content, and knowledge of programs that work. The focus will be on providing appropriate assistance and resources for the effective ministry of qualified individuals. The committee will encourage the highest standards of integrity and sound policy within the ranks of chaplains, in order to assist the sheriffs of the nation and to work effectively with members of their departments and the jail or correctional facility population.

The Legislative Affairs Committee acts as a direct liaison for Sheriffs to their Senators and representatives in Washington, DC, and facilitates communications with administration officials. Through the Legislative Affairs Division, the committee is responsible for monitoring, tracking, and analyzing legislative activity for the Association and it works closely with the Executive branch to develop and maintain cooperative relationships that benefit Sheriffs.

The Court Security Committee affirms its primary concern for issues as violence in courthouses across the nation escalates and deputies are increasingly exposed to violence as they transport prisoners and serve process. Furthermore, the Committee believes that the National Sheriffs' Association (NSA) must take a leading role in the formulation of our nation's response to this violence. The mission of the Court Security Committee is to educate NSA members, and the country at large, as to the proper equipment necessary for court security, prisoner transport and service of process.

The Youth Programs & Juvenile Justice Committee will serve as a vehicle through which problems facing juveniles across the country can be identified, assessed and addressed. The committee will strive to identify innovative programs addressing youth problems and promote these programs through National Sheriffs' Association (NSA) and its publications.
The committee can form subcommittees targeted to specific areas of concern when the need arises. These subcommittees will work to develop effective strategies in dealing with youth problems and identify and promote proven approaches and programs which increase the safety, security and well being of all youth people. |
