This webinar, hosted by the Pretrial Justice Institute, provides an excellent introduction to strategies that sheriffs and jail administrators can use to decrease jail crowding without compromising public safety or the integrity of the law. As pretrial populations continue to grow across the country and contribute to jail crowding, many local jurisdictions have figured out how to empower the stakeholders whose decisions affect the jail population to alter their pretrial policies and practices, resulting in decreased pretrial populations. These changes have helped alleviate crowded conditions and free up jail beds for other types of inmates, such as sentenced. Webinar participants will gain information and ideas to: (1) identify the causes of increasing jail populations nationally; (2) understand the role of the Sheriff’s Office and Jail Administration in more cost-effective local bail setting practices; (3) more effectively approach other stakeholders, such as judges, prosecutors, and defense attorneys, whose daily decisions affect the jail population; (4) implement policies, practices, and programs that improve the quality of justice and public safety at the pretrial stage; and (5) support AJA, NSA, and other national organizations promoting pretrial justice; and (6) access resources to help with implementing more legal and research-based pretrial policies and practices.
