Current Issues

  • Byrne Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program: Please contact your Congress members in both the U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate, and urge them to support including $490 million for the Byrne JAG program in the second Emergency Supplemental bill which is expected to be considered on the floor in September. The critical Byrne JAG program which funds drug and gang taskforces across the country was drastically reduced by 67% to $170 million in fiscal year 2008 and we need your help to ensure that the funding is restored.

  • Restoring County Health Care Costs: Urge your U.S. House of Representatives to become a cosponsor to H.R. 5698, the Restoring the Partnership for County Health Care Costs Act of 2008 sponsored by Rep. Alcee Hastings (D-FL). The bill would enhance the federal-local partnership in covering medical expenses for inmates by allowing individuals in custody to maintain the continuity of health care under Medicaid, Medicare, SSI and SCHIP, when they are newly-released from custody. View NSA's letter endorsing H.R. 5698. Currently, the Senate has not yet introduced its companion bill to H.R. 5698.
