Sheriffs Thankful to DOJ for Grants to Fund Additional Personnel and Training

Alexandria, VA - National Sheriffs’ Association Executive Director and CEO Jonathan Thompson issued the following statement regarding the announcement of the COPS Office Hiring grants from the Department of Justice, which included many Sheriffs offices that will use these funds to help them keep their communities safe.

“America's Sheriffs are thankful to DOJ for its leadership in funding Sheriff's offices to support hiring additional career law enforcement officers to address specific crime problems through community policing strategies, including community partnerships, problem solving, and organizational transformation.”
 
“In today's complicated law enforcement environment, offices need the means to hire well-qualified personnel and to be able to be innovative in the ways in which they fight crime and train officers and deputies.”

COPS Hiring Program (CHP) provides grant funding directly to state, local, and tribal law enforcement agencies to support hiring additional law enforcement officers for three years to address specific crime problems through community policing strategies.

The COPS Office awards grants to hire community policing officers, develop and test innovative policing strategies, and provide training and technical assistance to community members, local government leaders, and all levels of law enforcement. Since 1994, the COPS Office has invested more than $14 billion to help advance community policing.
