NSA Statement in Support of Hennepin County Sheriff's Office and Minnesota Law Enforcement

We were all saddened by the tragic death of Daunte Wright. In communities across our nation, like Brooklyn Center, law enforcement officers are often the most visible representatives of our democratic government. When law enforcement lets citizens down, we must find answers to live up to our community’s expectations, our training, our character and our core values, while collaboratively finding solutions to safeguard the sanctity of human rights.

While our families mourn from the pain of another loss of life, and our communities search to find answers, the National Sheriffs’ Association strongly supports the leadership of Sheriff David Hutchinson of Hennepin County, Minnesota.

Sheriff Hutchinson’s calm, ethical and exemplary leadership of the unified command structure has protected our sacred Constitutional rights of free speech and assembly and has been essential in keeping all citizens – protesters, activists and community members – safe during this most difficult time.

We ask community leaders across the city, county, state and region to work collaboratively with Sheriff Hutchinson in the days and weeks ahead. It will take strong leadership and partnerships from all parts of civic society to rebuild trust. It will take the difficult work of listening, learning, healing and action – and only together will we build a better, fairer and safer tomorrow.

Respectfully,

Sheriff David Mahoney
NSA President
