Oral Fluid Roadside Screening Webinar - A Valuable Tool for Law Enforcement

Oral Fluid Roadside Screening Webinar - A Valuable Tool for Law Enforcement

Date: Tuesday, February 13, 2024

Time: 1:00PM to 2:00PM Eastern

Responsibility.org, the National Alliance to Stop Impaired Driving (NASID), and the National Sheriffs’ Association (NSA) have partnered to bring you information on oral fluid screening. Increases in drug and multi-substance impaired driving call for expanded drug testing on the roadside. For officers who are not specially trained in drug impairment detection, oral fluid screening can aid in identifying drivers that may have recently consumed drugs who would otherwise escape detection. The technology has been proven to be an effective tool for SFST and/or ARIDE trained patrol deputies and officers who lack extensive DRE training. Like preliminary breath tests (PBTs) for alcohol, oral fluid tests can be used to screen for drugs and establish probable cause in combination with other evidence. These tests are fast, easy to use, reliable, and can detect the presence of drugs most found in the systems of impaired drivers (e.g., THC (cannabis), cocaine, methamphetamine, amphetamine, opioids, and benzodiazepines).

This webinar will explain what roadside oral fluid screening is and isn’t, how it is being utilized around the country and the successes seen in states, with special attention given to the Indiana roadside oral fluid screening program.

Presenters: Sheriff (ret.) John Whetsel, Chair, National Sheriffs’ Association Traffic Safety Committee Chuck DeWeese, President and CEO, Connecting Clients, LLC Chris Kirby, Northeast Region Law Enforcement Liaison, Indiana Criminal Justice Institute Casey Lehman, Lieutenant and DRE/Phlebotomist, Ekhart County (Indiana) Sheriff’s Office
