The work-related fatality rate for law enforcement is four to five times higher than the national average for the working population in US. The deputies and officers who serve their communities by protecting us all must also be shielded from incapacitating mental, physical, and emotional health issues and problems, as well as against the hazards that come with their job. Advanced training and participation in programs that promote physical and mental wellness can support officer safety and wellness, along with programs that detract from the stigma and dispel the barriers surrounding mental health care. Additionally, Sheriffs’ jail personnel directly interact with millions of people ranging from corrections to people under supervision in the community. Maintaining the safety, health, and wellness of all people in jails is paramount.
NSA recognizes the value to our members of addressing these issues and has created the NSA Wellness and Well-Being Symposium as a sub-event at our annual conference in Phoenix this summer. The Symposium is designed so that any NSA member or non-member can participate from anywhere – you do not have to attend the conference in Phoenix.
