SELPF Mission Statement

MISSION STATEMENT OF NATIONAL SHERIFFS' ASSOCIATION EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION(a §501(c) (3) TAX EXEMPT ORGANIZATION)

PURPOSE:

The  purpose of the National Sheriffs' Association Educational Foundation ("Foundation"), as a §501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization, among other tax-exempt functions, is to provide/issue grants, scholarships, distributions, loans, etc. on a non-discriminatory basis to eligible students and individuals crime prevention [ including eligible Deputy Sheriffs & Sheriffs] studying courses/programs in crime prevention, law enforcement, public safety and affiliated courses at accredited educational facilities, colleges and/or universities.  In addition, the Foundation may provide other §501(c)(3) organizations including eligible state sheriffs’ associations with assistance, including making funds  available from the Foundation to provide needy individuals or families who require immediate relief and economic assistance due to natural disasters (i.e. Hurricane Katrina), and/or due to domestic and foreign acts of terrorism.

 

The Foundation may solicit charitable contributions from the public and other 501(c) (3) tax-exempt organizations in educating policy makers, federal and state judiciaries, governmental agencies, departments and offices on issues directly affecting our nation’s Offices/Departments of Sheriff. Our nation’s Offices/Departments of Sheriff provide for the public safety and law enforcement in America’s local communities.

 

 The “Sheriffs’ Education & Legal Policy Fund” (“Fund”) is part of this Foundation which will allow the National Sheriffs’ Association[“ Association”] to address various issues, including but not limited to, border security, illegal immigration, domestic and foreign homeland security, the treatment of mental illness in our nation’s jails, etc. This Fund may be used by the National Sheriffs’ Association to study, to conduct surveys, to prepare studies/papers on various issues and subject matters in educating the public, all branches of government, and in filing Amicus Briefs (“Friend of the Court”) with the federal and state judiciaries, etc.

 

The President of the Association and the Chairs of the National Sheriffs’ Association Legal Affairs Committee and Congressional Affairs Committee will jointly decide how, what tax-exempt purpose, and on what issues these funds will be specifically used and allocated in consultation with the Executive Director and with the Management Subcommittee of the Association in accordance with the Constitution & Bylaws of this Association.

 

Furthermore, this Foundation will network and work collaboratively with similar profit and non-profit organizations and individuals in promoting the public's awareness on law enforcement and public safety issues.

 

In conclusion, this Foundation will coordinate and/or collaborate with and support the efforts of individuals, groups and organizations who have similar non-profit §501(c)(3) tax-exempt goals and purposes.  This Foundation is organized and operated exclusively for educational and charitable purposes within the meaning of §501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 ("Code"), as amended, and under the solicitation and charitable distribution laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia.
