Training & Events

NSA provides law enforcement training and events for sheriffs, their deputies, chiefs of police, and others in the field of criminal justice to perform their jobs in the best possible manner and to better serve the people of their jurisdiction and promote homeland security. 
 

Law Enforcement Conferences

Each year, Sheriffs, deputies, and other law enforcement professionals gather for our Annual Conference and Exhibition and our Winter Conference.  At our Annual Conference there are over 60 Seminars and Workshops covering all aspects of the duties and responsibilities for a sheriffs office or sheriff department, including, but not limited to Law Enforcement, Jail Operations, Service of Process, Prisoner Transportation, Court Security, and  Judicial Security. 

Each of the conferences provides a platform for lively debate on law enforcement issues that matter most, sheriff and police training and exhibits that are second to none, networking opportunities and the latest in programs and training in crime fighting techniques.
 

Court Security

NSA has long provided education for maintaining courthouse security and guarding the courthouse workgroup, citizens and users of the judicial system.  Court security training will provide an introduction to contemporary concepts and law enforcement strategies related to courthouse and courtroom security.
 

Jail Operations

The Jail Operations Section's primary responsibilities include directing and managing the correspondence courses for jail officers and first/second line jail supervisors, responding to technical assistance requests as they pertain to the operation of jails, and distributing and invoicing for publications and training jail aids offered by the section.
 

Domestic Violence

The National Sheriffs' Association (NSA) entered into a federally funded cooperative agreement with the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Justice Programs, Office on Violence Against Women (OVW) to develop and deliver the tuition-free Rural Law Enforcement Training: "Domestic Violence Intervention and Investigation." This program is designed for law enforcement, prosecutors, criminal justice personnel, and domestic violence victim advocates of small towns and rural areas.

 

National Sheriffs’ Institute

The National Sheriffs' Association (NSA), in concert with the National Institute of Corrections (NIC), boasts one of the nation's most respected sheriff  training opportunities available for new sheriffs.
 

Officer Leadership Program

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Office of Traffic Injury Control Programs, in partnership with the National Sheriffs' Association, sponsors a cooperative program for law enforcement agencies whereby an agency can send a police officer to Washington, D.C. for a one-year assignment.
 

Sheriff Training Partners

NSA has partnered with several law enforcement organizations to provide our members with opportunities to further their law enforcement education and training. 
 

Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC)

The FLETC and the NSA have partnered to expand opportunities for state and local law enforcement officers to access the FLETC’s secure online law enforcement training.  The FLETC delivers online courses, comprising law enforcement sensitive information, to a nationwide law enforcement audience through its Online Campus.
