Since its founding in 1940, the National Sheriffs' Association (NSA) has been the one voice of the nation's sheriffs in Washington, DC. As one of the largest US law enforcement organizations, NSA is a leading advocate on law enforcement, criminal justice, and public safety issues.
The Government Affairs Department, in conjunction with the Governmental Affairs Committee, develops the Association's law enforcement and homeland security policy positions and represents the Association before the United States Congress, the White House, and the various federal agencies. We continually work to build relationships with lawmakers and administration officials on both sides of the aisle and provide NSA members with up-to-date information on developments that affect their public safety and homeland security interests.

2019 Legislative Priorities
In order to best direct the resources of the Association, the Governmental Affairs Committee identified the following topical areas as key priorities for the 2019 Legislative Year:
- Border security
- Advocacy: Victims, Mental Health, Inmate Services
- Civil Asset Forfeiture
- Electronic Communications
- Traffic Safety
Legislation and policy issues outside of these areas do arise throughout the year and the Association’s involvement is determined on a case by case basis.
