Sheriff’s new cadet program provides opportunity for law enforcement careers

CANTON While law enforcement agencies across the nation bemoan the lack of young people interested in becoming police officers, Stark County Sheriff George T. Maier started a cadet program to entice on-the-fence young people before they’re old enough to change direction.

“What we’re learning, in our profession, it’s hard to get good recruits,” Maier said.

“Wouldn’t it be great if we could get somebody young and keep them interested in becoming a deputy and, when they become of age, we can plug them right into the training?”
