NSA Statement on Fentanyl Designation

December 16, 2025 – (Alexandria, V.A.) The National Sheriffs’ Association (NSA) released the following statement concerning the latest Executive Order from President Trump on fentanyl.

NSA commends the Administration for its decisive action in officially designating fentanyl as a weapon of mass destruction. This decision will hopefully mark a turning point in America’s fight against the deadly opioid epidemic and signals a new level of urgency in addressing the crisis that continues to devastate our communities nationwide. By mobilizing every relevant federal agency to treat this threat with the seriousness it deserves, the Administration has sent a clear message that the scourge of fentanyl will no longer be treated as a distant public health issue but as a national security priority worthy of our fullest and most coordinated response.

Sheriffs remain steadfast in their mission to protect our communities from the devastation of fentanyl. They have long sounded the alarm about the catastrophic impact of fentanyl, and today’s announcement reflects the determination with which the administration is now addressing this challenge. We deeply appreciate the White House’s recognition of the severity of this crisis and its commitment to safeguarding the American people, and helping us keep our communities safe.
