The Gilchrist County, FL, Ambush: The Killing of Two County Deputies and the Psychological Aftermath

Description:  On April 19, 2018, two deputies with the Gilchrist County Sheriff’s Office were ambushed and executed by a loner and recluse.  The impact on the agency, neighboring agencies, and the community is still being felt today.  Dr. McDougall, on scene immediately after the ambush, will take the audience through the details of the shooting, the response of the agency, and the psychological impact of the incident upon the surviving agency personnel. Dr. McDougall will utilize his vast experience with officer-involved shootings, line-of-duty deaths, and other trauma to provide suggested guidelines and procedures for agencies to address their preparation and reaction to these incidents.  Strategies to prevent or reduce the long-term effects of critical incidents will be discussed, along with related issues such vicarious trauma and post-traumatic stress.
